PALESTRINA Missa Hodie Christus natus est. Hodie Christus natus est. Christe Redemptor omnium Ex Patre. Magnificat 5 toni. Tui sunt caeli. Reges Tharsis. O magnum mysterium. Song of Songs: Excerpts • Harry Christophers, cond; The Sixteen • CORO COR 16105 (67:34 Text and Translation)

This is the second issue in the recently announced series of Palestrina works ( Fanfare 35:2). In what is clearly a pattern, this disc also offers a Mass with its related motet, additional motets related to the theme of the Mass, and three more sections of the Song of Songs. Just as the first disc added Marian motets to the Mass for the feast of the Assumption, this Mass is filled out with Christmas motets. The hymn Christe Redemptor omnium is an alternatim setting, as is the Magnificat. The Mass is one of four double-choir Masses first published together in 1601, the only such settings among the composer’s 105 Masses. This is at least the seventh recording of the Mass but the first in almost two decades. The most recent were directed by Jeremy Summerly with a large choir (18:1) and by Paul McCreesh with a vocal ensemble (not reviewed in the States); earlier examples were mostly choral renditions. Christophers’s tempos fall midway between those two versions. The most notable difference among the three versions comes in the Agnus Dei, which I presume was set once by the composer; McCreesh surrounds the single invocation with chant from Mass XVII for the first and last invocations, Summerly renders the music twice, supplying the altered text for the final invocation, as I would expect a Renaissance-era choir to do, and Christophers simply provides the single invocation as printed.

The promise of the first disc is fulfilled here with an exquisite rendition of the Mass and a fine collection of related motets. While many will appreciate the warmth of Summerly’s larger choir, the broad tempos, and the attractive price of a disc that couples it with a much-duplicated Lassus Mass for double choir, there is much to be said for the new disc in addition to its intelligent programming. Christophers explains in the notes that hymns composed as alternatim settings can be difficult to sing because the chant found in modern editions does not correspond to the melody used in the polyphonic verses. But the chant of this Christe Redemptor omnium can be deduced from the polyphony and confirmed from Victoria’s setting, which was published with the same chant printed out completely. He also notes how singers may have added unwritten accidentals to the chant in the same way the accidentals were written in the polyphony. He cites the superb volume of 68 offertories for the liturgical year that Palestrina published at the end of his life (Lassus published a similar set), for two of them are included here for Christmas and Epiphany. These two sets were the first to offer something to replace the chants that had always been sung at this place in the Mass. Richard Marlow (31:1) gave us one of the most extensive collections of these pieces. I look forward to the continuation of this series, impatient with the prospect of one disc per year. How long will this go on?

Renaissance English composer Thomas Tallis is deeply embedded in the Choir of New College Oxford's DNA, an ensemble founded in 1379, well before the birth of the composer. Tallis lived to a ripe old age, under four different monarchs, and was praised for his impeccable craftsmanship. As well as being beautifully finished, his music is also emotionally expressive: works such as Suscipe quaeso Domine demonstrate intense devotional feeling and dramatic text setting. His mastery of the cantus firmus technique is epitomised in the central piece of this album, the Mass 'Puer natus est nobis', a highly sophisticated seven-voice work that is sung here by children and adults. Other works on the programme showcase Tallis's innovation and variety: O nata lux, Salvator mundi and the extraordinary In jejunio et fletu. Tallis inhabited a sound world of his own - one characterised by the voices and musicianship of boy choristers as well as adult singers - so much so that Byrd could say after his death: 'Tallis is dead, and music dies'.

The Christmas carol has its origins in the Middle Ages but it has since embraced a wide variety of musical backgrounds. In this album, religious sentiment is set in many different contexts – from the mystery plays to an African American spiritual, from its origins in Gregorian Chant and 16th-century secular dance to traditional examples rooted in poetry. Some of the most famous and beautiful examples are heard alongside energizing contemporary carols to present a tapestry of the genre across the centuries.

    REVIEW:

The Edison Singers is a Canadian mixed adult choir (7-5-6-6 are listed for this album) founded in Ontario by Noel Edison in 2018. Their singing is well balanced, with commendable precision and clear delivery of the texts. This was recorded in the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate in Guelph, Ontario. The sound has the spacious ambiance you would expect from such a building. Here is a satisfying Christmas album with a different touch.

The programme opens with Nowakowski's radiant setting of The Seven Last Words of Christ, unfolding with both intimacy and dramatic weight. It is followed by a searing meditation on suffering, O Mater Dolorosa!, featuring violinist Karolina Hyla-Wybraniec. The album concludes with O Beauty Uncreated, Nowakowski's setting of St. Faustyna's celebrated reflection, performed in collaboration with Slovakia's Chamber Choir Omnia. This release marks Nowakowski's third portrait disc. His debut, Blood, Forgotten, garnered strong reviews in Gramophone, while his second, Metanoia, reached #1 on Amazon's digital classical chart.

The number of pieces written for Holy Week is vast. But you will hardly encounter such a unique treatment of fundamental Christian faith as in the Rappresentazione sacra al Santissimo Sepolcro, which was composed at the Viennese imperial court in the mid-17th century. It is a staged presentation of the events at Christ's tomb that was either composed by His Majesty Leopold I himself (from 1660) or by one of his court conductors. This recording presents the Sepolcro of 1667, which was set to music by a top Italian star - the Franciscan Antonio Cesti (1623-1669). The new imperial maestro di capella creates a world where allegorical figures representing nature and it's four elements mourn the sacred sacrifice. The waters drizzle down, the winds blow and the flames blaze - this master of opera cannot deny his true nature.

Christus der Erloser concludes Friedrich Schneider's (1786-1853) monumental Christ trilogy. In the 1820s, the Dessau court conductor had planned to depict the life of Jesus in a series of four oratorios - a project he did not complete, but which nevertheless resulted in three complete works: Christ the Child (published in 2022), Christ the Master (published in 2023), and Christ the Redeemer, in which Schneider turns his attention to the Passion of Christ. The work testifies to Schneider's great dramatic sensibility, his deep religious conviction, and his mastery of choir and orchestra.

Christus der Meister is the second of three Christus oratorios from the pen of Friedrich Schneider. After the prelude to the trilogy, Christus das Kind, was performed again by the Kantorei Barmen-Gemarke shortly before Christmas 2019 after more than a hundred years, the work that comes second within the trilogy but was written chronologically first now follows. Schneider's Christus Trilogy, which was originally planned as a series of four full-length oratorios, i.e. as a tetralogy, is of some significance in terms of genre history. Schneider's trilogy is also special in that it ranges from the story of the Nativity to the Passion, thus encompassing the entire life of Jesus. Schneider did not compose the originally intended fourth oratorio, Christ the Glorified.

Our fetishist regard for John Sebastian Bach as the pinnacle of Western art music obscures the fact that his talent was spawned by at least three generations of gifted predecessors. We celebrate this lineage by exploring the musical family archive Bach discovered in 1735. Among the hidden gems are intensely moving Geistliche Konzerte by his cousin Johann Christoph Bach, and the latter’s father Heinrich Bach. In his earliest preserved cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden, Johann Sebastian superbly imitates the polyphonic motet style of these foregoers, which was going out of fashion.

To make it's performance easier, Norbert Duechtel has adapted the Christmas Liederspiel "Christnacht" by Joseph Haas (1879-1960) for organ. The cantica nova holzkirchen choir under the direction of Katrin Wende-Ehmer - with inserted texts read by Alex Dorow - delivers a recording that is true to the original intentions of the composer Joseph Haas: "The incredible power of the text's words, though clumsy and awkward, their unique richness of imagery, the outward hardness and coarseness and the inward tenderness and vibrancy of the language appealed to me just as much as the indescribable melodic beauty of the tunes and the diversity of their shaping. This is authentic art of South German farmer baroque!"

Beethoven wrote that he composed the oratorio Christus am Ölberge (Christ on the Mount of Olives) in just "a fortnight, amid all sorts of tumult and other unpleasant and alarming events in my life." It marked the first time since the two ‘imperial cantatas’ of 1790, the Cantata on the Death of the Emperor Joseph II WoO 87 and the Cantata on the Accession of Leopold II WoO 88, that he had embarked on a multi-movement vocal work. Christus am Ölberge was also Beethoven’s first composition on a religious subject and was destined to remain his only oratorio.

Berlioz's L'Enfance Du Christ is probably known primarily due to it's famous "Shepherd's Chorus" but it is a piece that once listeners discover it, they realize a true golden gem has been found. It is primarily a choral work which tells the story of what are called the Infancy Narratives in the New Testament. Scenes of the work are taken from both the scriptures and legends and include Herod visiting a soothsayer which predicts the birth of the Messiah, the Annunciation (Mary learning of the birth of Jesus), the birth itself, and the flight into Egypt. This recording by the Orchestre National du Lille under the direction of Jean-Claude Casadesus captures both the beauty and scope of the work.

Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900) was a singular composer for the 19th Century. He found inspiration in the music of Wagner and Schumann, but was also the founder of the Bach Society and championed works of older composers such as Schütz as well as a personal friend of Brahms. While attracted to the music of the Lutheran church, he was a devout, life-long Catholic.

Herzogenberg's oratorio "The Birth of Christ" was quite extraordinary for its time. Large-scale religious music was no longer fashionable, and even most "Masses" were written for the concert hall rather than the Church. Herzongenberg's Die Geburt Christi is scored for a large orchestra, choir, children's chorus, soloists and organ and deftly combines the countrapuntal textures of Bach with the late Romantic harmonic language of Brahms. The result is a serene and oddly moving score, achieving some of its most touching moments with the simplest of forces (a lovely setting of Jesu, Lieber Jesu Mein" for solo voice and cello is just one highlight).

American composer Richard Toensing creates a vibrant musical synthesis of East and West with new settings of ancient Orthodox Christmas texts. Indebted to Slavic traditions, his virtuosic Choral Concerto for unaccompanied double choir and multiple soloists uses the dramatic words of St. Romanos the Melodist (6th c.) to recount the mystery of Jesus' birth. Toensing's more intimate New Orthodox Carols for the Nativity of Christ alternate between exuberant celebration and joyful contemplation as they bridge the gap between Byzantine and American hymnody. American composer and music educator Richard Toensing (1940-2014) received numerous award for composition during his lifetime, most notably from Columbia University, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts, and BMI.

The Seven Last Words of Christ refers to the seven short phrases uttered by Jesus on the cross, as gathered from the New Testament. Over the centuries the crucifixion has served as inspiration to countless composers, and settings of these utterances have become something of a subgenre, beginning in the Renaissance with early motets and continuing into our own time. By way of Cesar Franck and Sofia Gubaidulina, composers ranging from Heinrich Schutz to Tristan Murail have contributed versions using various combinations of voice and/or instruments. One of the best known of these settings is probably the one by Joseph Haydn. The one – or rather the four… A rather complicated story begins in 1785, when Haydn received a commission from Cadiz in Spain, at the other end of Europe. He was asked to compose seven slow movements, each ca 10 minutes long, to be played by an orchestra in alternation with the priest expounding on each of the seven words. Relishing this unusual challenge, Haydn accepted and ended up so pleased with the result that he immediately made a version for string quartet as well as authorising another one for keyboard. The work became so popular across Europe that ten years later the music was used one final time, in an oratorio for choir and orchestra. The work is here heard in the version for keyboard, performed by the French pianist Nicolas Stavy. He closes the disc with another unusual work in Haydn’s oeuvre, the Andante con variazioni, Hob. XVII/6, which has been described as ‘the deepest and most profound set of variations for piano composed between Bach and Beethoven’.
