Notes and Editorial Reviews
Sony Classical issues here a comprehensive edition of Zubin Mehta’s recordings for the RCA Red Seal and CBS/Sony labels. This extensive set documents half a century of outstanding achievement by one of the foremost conductors of our time. The Viennese-trained Indian maestro has enjoyed particularly close associations with the flagship orchestras of Vienna, New York, Los Angeles, Israel and Berlin, and the new box features him directing those ensembles in symphonies, concertos, symphonic poems, ballets and opera excerpts by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Liszt, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Mahler, Johann and Richard Strauss, Schoenberg, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Bartók and other composers. The lineup of soloists boasts such illustrious names as violinists Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, Midori and Nikolaj Znaider; pianists Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Emil Gilels, Daniel Barenboim, Murray Perahia, Yefim Bronfman and Rudolf Buchbinder; and sopranos Montserrat Caballé and Jane Eaglen. Mehta’s highly successful Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concerts from 1990, 1995, 1998, 2002 and 2015 are, of course also included as well as the Verdi Requiem and several complete operas: his celebrated recordings of Il trovatore and Tosca starring Leontyne Price, Plácido Domingo and Sherrill Milnes, along with Le nozze di Figaro with Michele Pertusi, Karita Mattila and Lucio Gallo and Salome with Eva Marton.

REVIEW:

Sony/BMG’s Zubin Mehta Complete Columbia Album Collection opens with his recorded debut as the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s music director in excellently played versions of Respighi’s Feste romane and Richard Strauss’ Don Juan. The somewhat dry engineering, however, is a far cry from the far more robust and lifelike sonics that were a hallmark of Mehta’s 1960s and 1970s Decca recordings in Los Angeles, not to mention his Vienna and Israel Philharmonic sessions for that label. The early ’70s Verdi Il Trovatore and Puccini Tosca recordings with the New Philharmonia Orchestra stand out for Mehta’s superb theatrical pacing and the young Placido Domingo on peak form.

Mehta’s first four years as the New York Philharmonic’s music director begat sonically and interpretively variable recordings of repertoire that either he had previously done better for Decca (Mahler’s First and Schubert’s “Unfinished” symphonies, Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition), or would do better in the future (the Brahms symphonies and piano concertos), or both (Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben). But Mehta supports Vladimir Horowitz beautifully in a live September, 1978 Rachmaninov Third concerto that surpasses the pianist’s tenser and sloppier January, 1978 Golden Jubilee recording with the same orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. Speaking of sloppy, Isaac Stern’s acid-toned Brahms Concerto should be passed over in favor of his earlier Columbia versions under Beecham and Ormandy; interestingly, Stern’s technique is surprisingly less frayed in his remakes of both Prokofiev concertos.

An impassioned live Choral Fantasy from 1983 with Emanuel Ax may well represent Mehta’s best Beethoven conducting on disc. Whereas Leonard Bernstein’s popular recording with this orchestra of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue wears its heart on its sleeve, I find the more straightforward Gary Graffman/Mehta/New York version more stylistically apt. One also should remember how Mehta often rose to the occasion in New York when presenting big choral works or opera in concert, as his 1982 Verdi Requiem, 1985 Wagner Die Walküre Act 1, and 1991 Schoenberg Gurre-Lieder bear out.

Although CBS did not renew its decades-long contract with the New York Philharmonic, the label still kept Mehta on, recording him in Israel, Berlin, Vienna, and Los Angeles. The company’s faith in the conductor bore positive fruit in the form of his 1992 Brahms recordings with the Israel Philharmonic, whose engineering conveys a concert hall realism that I vastly prefer to the relatively flat ambience and instrumental spotlighting of Mehta’s earlier New York Philharmonic versions. What is more, he eschews the latter’s twitchy tempo adjustments and mannered accents, restores the first three symphonies’ exposition repeats, and brings greater continuity, cumulative power, and unanimity of phrasing to the Haydn Variations.

Mehta’s Israel Philharmonic Mahler Third and Bruckner Eighth are heavier and more diffuse than their earlier L.A. counterparts, but the Berlin Richard Strauss recordings attest to Mehta’s effortless ability to shape and balance this composer’s opulent orchestration. The five Vienna New Year’s Concerts (1990, 1995, 1998, 2007, and 2015) may not be so interesting as the 1989 and 1982 Carlos Kleiber or 2001 and 2003 Nicholas Harnoncourt events, yet one cannot deny Mehta’s judicious tempos and spirited good taste.

The Prokofiev Piano Concerto cycle with soloist Yefim Bronfman stood as a reference for years, only recently surpassed by the Mustonen/Lintu versions. It’s also heartening to hear how Mehta takes trouble to make something special out of the Chopin Piano Concerto accompaniments that others phone in (possibly due to soloist Murray Perahia’s galvanizing presence). Certainly the Israel Smetana Ma Vlast would have garnered more attention had Sony promoted it with any enthusiasm (or any other post-1990 releases, for that matter!).

I’ve never considered Mehta to be a sensitive and stylish Mozartean, but then again, I hadn’t heard his 1992 Marriage of Figaro from the Florence May Festival nor his relaxed and genial Gran Partita with members of the Berlin Philharmonic. While the soggy, lifeless Berlin Bartók Concerto for Orchestra cannot hold a candle to Mehta’s earlier and infinitely superior Israel rendition for Decca, the same orchestra plays like crazy in a long-overlooked disc devoted to Liszt tone poems.

However, the extent to which Mehta imparts a personal stamp and consistency of vision throughout these recordings is hard to fully ascertain. One reason is that so much of the set is given over to accompaniments of concerto soloists, which don’t fully give Mehta a chance to shine. Another reason concerns my colleague David Hurwitz’s astute observation that the high points of Mehta’s career as a recording artist and as a concert performer did not coincide.

Indeed, some of Mehta’s peak New York achievements were not preserved apart from broadcasts, such as Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony in the composer’s presence, Jorge Bolet unearthing Joseph Marx’s rare Romantic Piano Concerto, and perhaps the most intense and moving Mahler Ninth ever given by this orchestra. What a contrast to Decca, who copiously documented Mehta’s formative years at the helm of the Los Angeles and Israel Philharmonic, not to mention memorable guest stints in Vienna. As such, the Complete Columbia Album Collection ultimately represents an ample, wide ranging, yet oddly piecemeal overview of Mehta’s artistry. A 191-page hardcover book contains full recording session data, a composer/works index, and an essay by Clemens Hellberg that borders on hagiography yet provides valuable information about Mehta’s background and education.
