Notes and Editorial Reviews
Without Arnold Schoenberg and his creation of the Second Viennese School, I guess the handful of works by Anton Webern would now be just a distant memory. In total they can be contained within two CDs, Robert Craft extending it to three by the inclusion of Webern’s arrangements. I suppose such words will be seen as those of a heretic, but how are we to judge him on such slim evidence of his talents, as he had set about slimming down music to its essentials, the three movements of his String Quartet lasting no more than eight minutes. To Craft they are the work of a genius, his second complete recording of his total output receiving immaculate performances that here include the American soprano, Tony Arnold, in five groups of his songs, probably bringing a more lyric and smooth approach than was prevalent in the hair-vest performances of yesteryear. I was equally pleased to hear young Claire Booth, whose operatic roles I have so much admired, as the soloist in the First Cantata with the Philharmonia. Some familiar names in the chamber music include the cellist Fred Sherry, clarinetist Charles Neidich, and Leila Josefowicz as the principal violinist in the Chamber Symphony arrangement. So if you want to come to terms with Webern’s output, do start here with the impeccable credentials of all concerned. Various locations and dates—mostly in New York during 2011—but overall very good sound. - David Denton
