Notes and Editorial Reviews
French opera has a long and important history in the development of Western classical music. From the birth of the French operatic tradition at the court of Louis XIV with Jean-Baptiste Lully, to more modern interpretations by composers such as Olivier Messiaen and Maurice Ravel, French opera remains a mainstay of classical repertoire for many of the world s finest and most accomplished voices.

This phenomenal five disc set of French opera recordings by EMI and Virgin Classics artists highlights many of the most celebrated works in the French operatic tradition. With recordings of pieces by Lully, Berlioz, Offenbach, Bizet, Poulenc, and many more composers, the set spans the entire history of the genre.

This collection features some of the greatest voices in classical music, from French singers such as Patricia Petibon, Pol Plançon, and Natalie Dessay, to American vocalists including Maria Callas, Joyce DiDonato, and Rockwell Blake. This multi-disc compilation offers a perfect introduction to this important operatic tradition.
