Notes and Editorial Reviews
Pomme d'Api, Monsieur Choufleuri restera chez Jul and Mesdames de la Halle are not only typical of Offenbach but present different facets of his inimitable talent... [In Pomme d'Api] Mady Mesplé, the star of the whole set, is excellent as the maid to an old lecher who, it transpires, is her ex-lover's uncle... Monsieur Choufleuri is hilarious and I found myself laughing aloud... Outstanding is the Meyerbeer-like bolero sung by Mady Mesplé [in Mesdames de la Halle]... This is a delightful addition to the catalogue...

reviewing the original LP release

[Mesplé] is glittering and expressive in the aria from Pomme d'Api, one of three one-act operettas by Offenbach that she also recorded complete in Monte-Carlo, as here, but with Manuel Rosenthal in the pit in 1982. The other two were Monsieur Choufleuri and Mesdames de la Halle. If they are still available they are definitely worth seeking out.
