Notes and Editorial Reviews
To celebrate his 90th birthday, Paul Badura-Skoda has curated this selection from his Westminster recordings. In the 20 discs included here are concertos, solo and chamber works where we witness the artistic integrity of an artist who is as celebrated for his technical abilities as he is for his scholarly interpretations. Newly remastered from the original tapes, we are afforded a fresh evolution of these rare gems from the Westminster catalog.

The elevation to international acclaim on the concert platform of the eminent Austrian pianist, music editor and pedagogue, Paul Badura-Skoda was nothing less than meteoric. Two years after entering the Vienna Conservatory, he won first prize in the 1947 Austrian Music Competition and was awarded a scholarship allowing him to study with Edwin Fischer. Two years later, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan became aware of Badura-Skoda's outstanding talent and invited him to perform with them. Practically overnight the young Viennese became a world-famous artist.

Since then, Badura-Skoda has been a regular and celebrated guest at the most important music festivals and a soloist with the world's most prestigious orchestras, performing with renowned conductors as George Szell, Karl Böhm, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Georg Solti, Kent Nagano and John Eliot Gardiner; and continues to perform into his 90th year.

Well known for his musical scholarship, Badura-Skoda holds the most valuable interpretation as the one that best realizes the composer’s intentions. Together with his wife, Eva, he has edited a volume of the Mozart piano concertos for the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe and written books on the interpretation of the keyboard music of Mozart and Bach.
