Notes and Editorial Reviews

Under the direction of its Chief Conductor Alexander Liebreich, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra has become the leading ensemble in the country and is one of Europe’s major radio orchestras. As cultural ambassadors with a rich tradition, the orchestra has made its mark through performances of Polish composers, as it is impressively seen in this cycle that features works by Karol Szymanowski and Witold Lutoslawski. The three-part cycle was unanimously praised by international reviews and received the International Classical Music Award 2017 as “Best Collection”. Now, all three albums are available as a 3-release set, presented here.

Review excerpts of some of the previously released albums included in this set:

Szymanowski: Symphony No. 2; Lutoslawski: Livre & Musique Funebre:

A Gramophone Editor's Choice! An altogether superb program.

– Gramophone

The ever excellent Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra is passionate in its response to Alexander Liebreich’s inspired conducting in this appealing All-Polish program.

– Pizzicato

Szymanowski: Overture, Op. 12; Lutoslawski: Cello Concerto; Symphony No. 4:

The high point of the disc is the Lutoslawski Cello Concerto, in which soloist Gautier Capuçon demonstrates the height and breadth of his power and virtuosity. Alexander Liebreich and his orchestra play with sensitive tone, warm sound colour and dramatic but accessible astuteness.
