Notes and Editorial Reviews
· Released ahead of Seiji Ozawa’s 80th birthday in September 2015, this 50-CD set includes the legendary Japanese conductor’s most celebrated recordings for Philips and Decca. It spans four decades and three continents and an astonishing breadth of repertoire.

· Ozawa has always been a prolific recording artist, from his earliest LPs in the 1960s, and this collection embraces the key orchestral relationships of his career: San Francisco and Boston, Berlin, Paris and Vienna and, for the past thirty years, the Saito Kinen Orchestra in Japan.

· The earliest recording in the set dates from February 1974 — the Beethoven Ninth in London — and the most recent is the Brahms First from Carnegie Hall, New York in December 2010. In between these two dates, there is a vast array of classic recordings to discover. Highlights include the complete Mahler cycle with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Ozawa’s complete recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, culminating in his appearance at the New Year’s Concert in 2002 (sales of the CD afterwards produced record-breaking results).

· Before his appointment as Music Director of the Vienna State Opera (2002-2010), Seiji Ozawa served as Music Director of the Boston Symphony for 29 seasons (1973-2002). When once asked to reflect on this record-breaking tenure at the, Ozawa commented: “There have been so many experiences, so many friendships, so much wonderful music. I suppose in the end I’ve learned that music is everyday work. That this kind of art is practised and lived every day of your life.”

· This set celebrates just some of those musical friendships — famous recordings with Jessye Norman and Viktoria Mullova and the championing of works by his compatriot Toru Takemitsu. The bonus CD was released to mark the historic 1979 Boston Symphony tour of China, following the then recently signed cultural pact between the two nations.

“The Saito Kinen Orchestra has become, under Ozawa's careful stewardship, one of the world's finest ensembles. Few orchestras could surpass the discipline and refinement of the playing we have on this disc... Ozawa's reading is spirited and gracious.” Gramophone on Beethoven Symphony No. 3 “[It] brings the very best out of Seiji Ozawa, a colourist who likes to mould the music and make it dance” Gramophone on Scheherazade

“Aside from the sheer pleasure of hearing the Boston Symphony in excellent form, there are some real gems here. Ozawa’s renditions of the First, Third, Fourth, Seventh, and Ninth all rank among the finest available” Classicstoday.com on the complete Mahler cycle

R E V I E W S:

"Ozawa's interpretation of The Planets is assuredly not in the Boult tradition, but brings a fresh approach to Holst's sole excursion into extravagance. Tempos are not those to which we are accustomed: 'Mars' brings war at record speed and 'Mercury' is more leisurely winged messenger than usual. Both 'Venus' and 'Jupiter' are presented more conventionally and are finely played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Ozawa misses some of the tenor of 'Saturn', seeming to treat it more as an exercise in sonorities, but is exhilarating in 'Uranus', where the timpanist has a field day. -- Gramophone [6/1987] reviewing The Planets

"All the elements here are of the highest quality - the three soloists, the BPO of course, and the choirs... A Japanese chorus recording this work in Germany surely needs some comment but gets none at all. Anyway, the Shin Yu-Kai Choir sing superbly and with total commitment. The men produce suitably lusty tone when needed, and the women are not found wanting by the sometimes cruelly high writing for them... Ozawa brings tremendous rhythmic drive to the whole thing, as well as a tonal brilliance that is thrilling. At the same time, he allows the softer sections the poise and dreaminess they need, and controls the tempo fluctuations with a perfect sense of timing. Gruberova's high D in the 'Dulcissime' solo is superbly sung - though it sounds almost too much under control; there ought perhaps to be something more primitive about this defining moment in the piece." -- Gwyn Parry-Jones, MusicWeb International reviewing Carmina Burana

"It was in the introduction to his 1917 revision of his play The Breasts of Tirésias that Guillaume Apollinaire coined the term ‘surrealist’. Thérèse is bored with being a woman so decides to become a man: her balloon breasts free themselves, she takes the name Tirésias and her husband becomes the baby-maker – ‘Since my wife’s a man, It’s only fair that I’m a woman’ (George Hall’s translation in the booklet). The necessity of increasing birth-rates is the moral theme of both Apollinaire’s original and the hilarious opera Poulenc based on it in 1944 – Thérèse’s husband manages to produce 40,049 babies in one day. It is high time for a new recording of Tirésias; the last – and first – was made in 1953 and, authoritative as it was, I can see this stunning new release – of a 1963 revision of the work – winning the opera a whole new generation of admirers. The cast is multinational and the provenance is Japanese (an offshoot of Ozawa’s Saito Kinen Festival), but the result sounds French. Barbara Bonney is in sparkling voice as Thérèse and Tiresias, while Fouchécourt is especially engaging as the Husband. Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Orchestra have tremendous fun with what must be Poulenc’s wittiest score and the whole enterprise has the whiff of vaudeville about it. The apt coupling of Le bal masqué has Wolfgang Holzmair in fine voice, with a refined chamber ensemble led by Michel Béroff. The only thing that sullies this disc is a typographical nightmare of a booklet." Performance: 5 (out of 5), Sound: 5 (out of 5) -- BBC Music Magazine reviewing the Poulenc

"Seiji Ozawa's warmly eloquent account, with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder wins the award in the choral category. It is a work that until quite recently was something of a by-word for post-Romantic megalomania, decadent over-expressiveness and a clogged density of sound that seemed virtually unrecordable. Without losing any of the plum-cake richness of the score's more grandiose pages, Ozawa, his orchestra (playing quite magnificently) and the Philips engineers have found a remarkable range of texture, delicate as well as massive, translucent as well as opaque, in this bewilderingly diverse yet fascinating work. It is a fine achievement, and Jessye Norman's glorious singing in the role of Tove makes it a memorable one. May it lead—as it surely must, if it is as widely heard as it deserves—to a more general recognition of the stature of this monstrous but moving and compelling masterpiece. I have to confess (there is no point in denying it: it was only a couple of months ago and memories aren't that short) that in my original review I did not choose this recording as the best available Gurrelieder; I found it, in a word, insufficiently Schoenbergian. It is good for a reviewer to have the rug pulled from under his feet once in a while, and I am delighted that the great virtues of Ozawa's performance have been so enthusiastically recognized and signalled by a well-merited award." -- Gramophone [1979 Awards] reviewing Gurrelieder
