Notes and Editorial Reviews
German star conductor Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden present a brand new recording of all four symphonies of Robert Schumann (1810-1856), who lived in Dresden from 1844 to 1850 and wrote his second symphony there. The recording took place in Suntory Hall, Tokyo alongside concerts which received great critical acclaim.

To celebrate the 60th birthday of the international renowned conductor, Christian Thielemann, Sony Classical is pleased to release this stunning new recording of Schumann’s complete symphonies performed by the world class Staatskapelle Dresden under the baton of Thielemann. This breathtaking release comes after the success of the critically acclaimed New Year’s concert which was conducted by Thielemann. An expert of romantic German repertoire, Thielemann‘s brilliant interpretation of Schumann’s Symphonies is performed wonderfully by the Staatskapelle Dresden. Robert Schumann (1810-1856) is considered one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. His four symphonies are considered masterpieces amongst German romantic symphonic works.

REVIEW:

In phrase after elegantly turned phrase, you hear how much this music means to Thielemann; the affection is palpable to a more discernable degree than in his previous recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Fabulous Set
By: ArkivMusic Customer on April 07, 2021
Format: CD
The Dresden Staatskapelle confirms its exalted position as one of the world's premiere orchestras in this superb cycle of symphonies by Robert Schumann.  Recorded in Tokyo (undoubtedly part of an Asian tour), each symphony is an
absolute tour de force, with power, elegance, and  above all
a golden luster in the recording's sonics.  Christian Thielemann is a great interpreter of Schumann,  and he
has his great orchestra performing at the  top of its game
here.  Further superlatives are not really necessary;  this
set is a total winner and zooms to the top of the list  of  the
many fine Schumann cycles available.
