Notes and Editorial Reviews
Schubert's C major Fantasy for piano, popularly known as 'The Wanderer' for the song on which it is based, stands out among his keyboard works not only for its ambitiously extended form but for its sheer virtuosity, so substantial that legend has it the composer himself could not play through it without stopping. It is amazing that such an eminent Schubertian as András Schiff, who has set down nearly every note of Schubert's piano music on disc, has not until now recorded the 'The Wanderer.' His interpretation is somewhat measured, certainly not easily surrendering to the virtuoso element, but perhaps all the better for that, as it seems to gather momentum and strength as it goes along. The Fantasy for Violin and Piano, which features variations on another Schubert lied, 'Sei mir gegrüsst,' is an altogether lighter affair, and is given an appropriately airy and nimble performance by Schiff and violinist Yuko Shiokawa.
