Notes and Editorial Reviews
Like so much of Rodrigo's music, [Concierto pastoral] is full of amiable and colourfully dressed tunes, and laced with familiar musical and instrumental formulae; the Adagio is the best of it—slow movements frequently bring out the best in Rodrigo. The Concierto is also cruelly difficult for the soloist: James Galway (RCA), its dedicatee, despatched it with his customary ease, Lena Hansen (EMI) surmounted its problems very well but with less panache. Jennifer Stinton, whose orchestral support is crisply recorded and in admirable balance, handles the chirpings and pipings of the outer movements with aplomb, and gives eloquent voice to the yearnings of the central one; altogether this is a very satisfying performance.
