Notes and Editorial Reviews
Who knew? This music is delightful. The excellent sopranos Ana María Martínez and Nuria Rial share the spotlight over most of the songs and vocal pieces on these six discs, accompanied by orchestra (the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia under Antoní Ros Marbá, primarily), piano, organ, guitar, and various chamber combinations. If you’re not a fan of voice and piano alone, start with Disc 4, and the Triptic de Mossèn Cinto for soprano and orchestra, or try the Songs of Love and War on the same disc. You’ll be hooked. Happily the CD-ROM that comes with this set includes the sung texts (there are a lot of them) but unfortunately no translations. Since all of Rodrigo’s music is very vocal, very lyrical, and very Spanish, you’d expect to find some of his best work here. You will.
