Notes and Editorial Reviews
Skrowaczewski’s four-LP Vox Box presenting Ravel’s complete orchestral music was released in 1975, well into his nearly 20-year tenure as music director of the Minnesota Orchestra... The conductor is an effective Ravel interpreter, offering carefully shaped and considered performances, and always giving full measure to the wonders of the orchestration... Skrowaczewski’s La valse manifests plenty of tempo flexibility without losing a constant feel for the triple meter, even if there’s not the last word in giddy, choreographic sweep. Best on this disc is the Daphnis and Chloé Suite. The opening is stunningly atmospheric, and the flute solo is beautifully shaded, growing organically in excitement. A surging, headlong “General Dance” closes out a very successful program...
