Notes and Editorial Reviews
For collectors who are unfamiliar with Jussi Björling (1911-1960), he was one of the great lyric tenors of the middle years of the twentieth century. Although the voice was not especially large it was very well produced which allowed him to essay roles which normally would have been considered too heavy for him. Complete recordings exist of many of his most important roles. The present compilation presents Björling recorded when he was in his middle twenties. The tenor is heard in songs and arias, for the most part sung in the original languages, which was something of a rarity at the time. The material is classic Björling.
In their reissue of material recorded for 78s Nimbus plays the records and records the results much as they would a singer actually performing rather then a direct electronic transfer of the recording form disc to tape. The addition of room resonance gives the sound some additional bloom over other transfer processes although it can also lack a certain clarity that some listeners prefer.
