Notes and Editorial Reviews
Boulez’s CBS legacy contains some remarkable work, from the perverse (Symphonie fantastique) to the often fabulous (much of his Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Bartók), to the merely dull (Beethoven’s Fifth). One thing, however, is clear: Boulez was not a great conductor, in the sense that he could bend any ensemble to his will and get them to surpass themselves (as could, say, Bernstein, Stokowski, Mackerras, or even Harnoncourt). He was very much at the mercy of his ensembles. That’s what makes his Beethoven so boring; if he has a conception, damned if he convinces the New Philharmonia to do anything more than phone it in.

In contemporary music, especially that of the Second Viennese School, he got credit for recording pieces that few others would touch–especially the works of Anton Webern. But let’s face it: while never bad, most of these performances have been surpassed. His Berg Violon Concerto (with Pinchas Zuckerman) plus Three Pieces for Orchestra never matched versions by Perlman/Ozawa (in the former) and Karajan (in the latter). His Wozzek is very good, especially the sympathetic singing of Walter Berry in the title role, but the orchestral playing of the Paris orchestra, good though it is, can’t compare with Dohnányi and the Vienna Philharmonic on Decca. His Debussy Pelléas et Mélisande is also worth hearing, especially for the always insightful Elisabeth Söderström’s heroine, but Boulez’s contribution hasn’t the luster of Karajan or the fine detail of Abbado.

When he had a great orchestra, the results often were great too. This applies especially to his recordings made in Cleveland–stunning versions of The Rite of Spring and Debussy’s Images–but also to much of his work in New York. There was more great Stravinsky (The Firebird and Song of the Nightingale), terrific Bartók (Concerto for Orchestra, the two ballets, and the 4 Orchestral Pieces), and some wonderful Ravel, including a complete Daphnis et Chloé. He even managed two surprisingly entertaining Handel discs, containing the complete Water Music, Fireworks Music, and other pieces. Of all the music here, though, the composer closest to Boulez’s heart seems to have been Ravel, if only because his concern for precision, color, polish, and even his emotional reticence comes so close to that of Boulez’s own music, different though its structural principles may be.

It’s always difficult to judge a conductor’s technique from recordings alone, but there is evidence of what seems, in retrospect, a simple lack of finesse on the podium–and this despite Boulez’s notorious nickname (“The French Correction”). Certainly he could explain what he wanted, but could he always transmit this in performance, through the baton? Consider the Fandango in Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat. At the start, the score asks that the two concluding eighth notes in specific bars be “very slightly held back.” Boulez is certain not “very slightly,” and he gives the soft notes in the stopped horns the same prominence as the actual melody. Compare this to Ansermet, who conducted the work’s premiere, to hear how it should be done.

Mind you, Boulez isn’t “wrong,” in the sense that he remains entitled to his interpretive predilections just as any conductor is, but that is the point. He claims no special authority in much of this music, contrary to the mystique the surrounded many of these discs on their initial release. A “strictly by the score” fanatic he certainly was not; or if he was, the audible evidence shows that he wasn’t always able to show it. He was wise to carve out a niche for himself and dominate it for as long as he could. He managed his image and reputation very shrewdly. As his later career conducting some of the more standard repertoire (Mahler, Strauss, Bruckner) reveals, he often was not terribly competitive.

This sixty-seven disc set, then, really does contain the best of Boulez as a conductor. Only his Ravel remakes in Berlin for DG can be accounted superior to what we have here, and then only marginally. This collection also contains novelties such as his enterprising championship of Mahler’s three-part Das Klagende Lied–even though the conclusion lacks brilliance and thrust–and that surprising recording of Wagner’s hopelessly awful choral cantata The Love-Feast of the Apostles. Boulez’s Varèse also is still pretty impressive, and these recordings of his own, largely miserable original compositions remain, on balance, superior to the remakes–but that’s another story.

It’s worth mentioning that not everything here is conducted by Boulez. On the Berio disc containing Nones, Allelujah II, and the Concerto for 2 Pianos, Boulez only participates in the second piece, while the composer conducts the rest. The first of the two Ravel piano concertos (in G major), with Philippe Entremont, features Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra–not too shabby there.

To conclude: as a cultural force Boulez and his crew essentially destroyed 20th century French music, but that doesn’t concern us here. As a conductor he made a slew of fine recordings, and successfully participated in canonizing many new classics, especially works of the Second Viennese School. This is ironic, as no one fought harder against “the classics” than Boulez did. But as this very interesting, entertaining, and worthwhile set shows, even modern music was bigger than he was, and no single hand guides the process–thank goodness.
