MAYR The Marriage of Tobias Franz Hauk (hpd, cond); Judith Spiesser ( Raguel ); Margriet Buchberger ( Anna ); Cornelia Horak ( Sara ); Susanne Bernard ( Archangel Raphael ); Stefanie Irányi ( Tobias ); Simon Mayr Ens & Ch NAXOS 8.570752 (2 CDs: 95:19)

Although Simon Mayr is perhaps best remembered today as the teacher of Donizetti, he was a significant composer of operas, oratorios, and other vocal and instrumental works. Born in Bavaria, he went to Italy to study music, ending up in Venice. His earliest sacred compositions led to a commission from the Ospedale dei Mendicanti (one of Venice’s conservatories for women) for an oratorio, Iacob a Labano fugiens in 1791, the first of six oratorios Mayr composed in the first half of the decade before turning his major focus to opera.

Tobiae matrimonium (“The Marriage of Tobias”) is the third of these works, written in 1794, also for the Ospedale dei Mendicanti. That necessarily resulted in a work for treble voices (four sopranos and one mezzo) and a female chorus. Mayr’s style is reminiscent of Mozart and Haydn, but he is no pale imitator of these great masters. His vocal writing is very attractive, he has a gift for melody, and his orchestration is imaginative and varied. Mayr’s work is strong enough to stand on its own and deserves to be better known. In fact, we seem to be in the midst of a small Mayr revival. With this recording, four of Mayr’s six early oratorios are available on CD, and there are recordings of other sacred works, as well as five operas.

Conductor Franz Hauk seems to be something of a Mayr specialist. All of his recordings listed at arkivmusic.com are of works by Mayr. An earlier recording for Naxos of Mayr’s David in the Cave of Engedi was praised by Patrick Rucker in Fanfare 32:4. I agree wholeheartedly with his assessment. Hauk leads a strong performance, sensibly paced, in which the many felicitous details of Mayr’s orchestration are well served by the expert Simon Mayr Ensemble.

The soloists are a generally accomplished group. All are adept at coloratura (a couple even have decent trills). They employ vibrato, which may not be to the taste of all listeners. In fact, Margriet Buchberger goes a bit too far in this regard. Cornelia Horak as Sara has a more “mature” sound than does Buchberger; these two singers should probably have switched roles. Stefanie Irányi as Tobias, the only mezzo, is not quite as accomplished as her discmates. She is not as smooth in coloratura or as comfortable in her lowest notes, but she is never less than good in her portrayal. The female chorus is excellent.

As usual with Naxos, the libretto must be downloaded from its Web site. Naxos promises an English translation, but the online libretto is in Latin and German only. The CD booklet contains a synopsis. At Naxos’s price, this recording should be irresistible to anyone interested in the music of the late 18th century.
