Notes and Editorial Reviews
As ever, the first sound of her voice brings a thrill of recognition—not simply of the sound but of the art and the soul within it.

Of the duets by Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano (0 0 CDM7 69543-2: 75 minutes: ADD), much could be written in praise of Callas's part in them. As ever, the first sound of her voice brings a thrill of recognition—not simply of the sound but of the art and the soul within it. We sample her Gilda in Rigoletto and Mimi in La boheme, both special voice creations: not disguises, which might fall off in an accident, but through-and-through identities. Di Stefano is best suited in the Puccini excerpts, least well in the Bellini (I puritani), but one must always be grateful for his responsiveness, never inert or merely nominal.
