Notes and Editorial Reviews
Under the direction of Nikolaus Lehnhoff, the renowned Glyndebourne Festival Opera brings to life Leos Janacek's masterpiece Jenufa - a tale of passion, betrayal, and the transfiguring power of love. Soprano Anja Silja sings the role of the embittered widow, Kostelnicka, who drowns her infant grandson to save her beloved stepdaughter Jenufa (Roberta Alexander) from the shame and hardship of raising an illegitimate child. This highly accalimed production resurrects the Brno version of the opera, unseen and unheard since its 1904 debut. Conducted by Andrew Davis, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a stellar cast restore Jenufa to its original poignancy and raw brilliance, exploring how love and honor gone awry can lead to tragedy.
