Notes and Editorial Reviews

This issue of Hartmann's uses the revised version of 1956 57, Simplicius Simplicissimus (subtitled ‘Three Scenes from his Youth’). It's a viscerally powerful work, a fast-paced attack on the tyranny and its deleterious impact on society and ordinary people. Landsknecht is menacingly sung here by Ashley Holland, and Julianne Banse possesses a lovely purity of tone. This recording, of the few recent versions available, is the one to have.
