Notes and Editorial Reviews
La Favorite was premièred at Paris’s Opéra on 2nd December 1840. Its success was resounding and is witnessed by over 650 performances in that theatre between 1840 and 1904. The Italian version was staged for the first time in Padua in 1842. This recording dates from 1976 and brings us back to the times of Kraus, Cortez, Bruson and Siepi. Especially noteworthy are the Fernando of Kraus, a tenor endowed with a perfect technique and peerless vocal elegance, and the Alfonso of Bruson, a baritone voice of impressive splendour.

---------------------------------

Recorded live at the Teatro Comunale of Bergamo, this version of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena is noteworthy for at least two reasons: in addition to being the complete version of this opera, this 3CD-set features, in the main roles, the Greek soprano Dimitra Theodossiou - a splendid and passionate Anne Boleyn - and the fine Sonia Ganassi - giving a very expressive interpretation of Jane Seymour.

-----------------------------------------------

"Musically, Ugo, conte di Parigi is not a negligible work at all, rich in well-crafted ensembles, such as the powerful act I finale and the chorus-supported Trio in act II...Dimitriu's portrayal of Bianca is passionate in its commitment and quite virtuosic in execution, particularly in the chromatic runs of the cabaletta “No, che infelice appieno”. The role is quite demanding, and Ms. Dimitriu fearlessly rises to all its challenges. Carmen Giannattasio’s portrayal of the gentler Adelia is also above reproach. Dramatically, the opera’s finale leaves the listener somewhat shortchanged, but the solid Emma (mezzo Milijana Nikolic) and the frenetic Bianca (Doina Dimitriu) leave no tone unturned.

Donizetti wrote the part of the young King Luigi for a mezzo-soprano, and Opera Rara’s Della Jones performs it admirably. Dynamic has chosen a male alto (Sym Tokyurek), tonally less secure but quite appropriate in capturing a certain weakness and immaturity in the young king’s character."
