Notes and Editorial Reviews
Concertgebouw Orchestra/Bernard Haitink. Philips 400 023-2 [Nocturnes, with Jeux] and 416 444-2 [La mer and Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, with Ibéria] (recorded 1976-79).

Haitink’s recordings of the major orchestral works of Debussy still rank among his most impressive discographic achievements, a tribute both to his own enormous skills as an interpreter of this music and to the stylistic flexibility of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, whose music director he was for a quarter of a century. The account of the Nocturnes is one of the finest ever – evocative, poetic, gorgeously played, and brilliantly detailed. In Haitink’s reading of La mer there is poise, flow, and high suspense, and the response of the orchestra is similarly supple and virtuosic. The work presents itself precisely as intended, as a set of three “symphonic sketches” rather than a kaleidoscope with one picture jerkily falling upon the next. Although the Concertgebouw is a difficult venue in which to record, the Philips team manages to achieve excellent balances on both recordings, with a nearly ideal sense of distance and atmosphere. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
