Notes and Editorial Reviews
This is the ECM New Series debut for the highly gifted Swiss clarinettist Reto Bieri. Contrechant is a brilliant recital for solo clarinet that looks at new developmental possibilities in the ‘language’ of the instrument in modern music. The album serves as a wonderful panorama of contemporary music for clarinet by giants of new music – Elliott Carter, Heinz Holliger, Luciano Berio, Peter Eötvös and Salvatore Sciarrino - and includes an intriguing work by much discussed young Hungarian composer by the name of Gergely Vajda. With the exception of the late Berio, Regto Bieri worked closely with all the featured composers toward the optimum realization of the pieces heard here.
