Notes and Editorial Reviews
Claude Debussy conveyed his skill as a brilliant colourist through his works for solo piano. So evocative are these pieces that many great conductors and composers have been inspired to arrange them to employ the full palette available to a symphony orchestra. The results are spirited, inventive scores which enrich the listener’s perception of the original — and in some cases, perhaps even surpass it. Conductor Yoav Talmi leads Canada’s oldest symphony orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2002.

DEBUSSY Children’s Corner. Clair de lune (2 orchestrations). La Soirée dans Grenade. Petite Suite. 6 Épigraphes antiques . Sarabande. Danse Yoav Talmi, cond; Quebec SO ATMA ACD2 2671 (73:00)

I suppose there can never be enough good recordings of anything but, given the number of perfectly good recordings of this particular repertory, my initial reaction to this Atma CD was something to the effect of “Why this?” By the time I finished Children’s Corner after comparing it with such competition as I could muster, my interest was aroused and it didn’t diminish as I gradually made my way through the CD and compared it with other such collections. The producer favors a more aggressive mike placement than many others but gets lots of relevant detail without losing the sense of the hall, and Yoav Talmi and his players seem tuned in to the music’s sentiment without bathing in it. One might prefer, say, Ansermet’s refinement in his wispy Épigraphes antiques orchestration or Stokowski’s own recording of his Clair de lune transcription … but not by much, I would guess, and I’m quite pleased that Talmi not only acknowledges the existence of the Stokowski (along with the “standard” Caplet edition) but gives it a performance worthy of the transcriber himself. I might have preferred that such sensitivity had been expended on some less familiar music, but anyone who’s looking for transcriptions of Debussy’s piano music won’t go wrong here.
