Notes and Editorial Reviews
The British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham was renowned for his interpretations of French repertoire. This Carmen was recorded in France with a Spanish singer – Victoria de los Angeles – as Bizet’s gypsy; she exudes both charm and seduction.
The pleasure of hearing an entirely francophone cast surrounding the leading couple is immense. Victoria de los Angeles's Carmen is gently but irresistibly seductive. Nicolai Gedda's lyrical, plaintive Don Jose is a good match. Beecham's conducting is a fresh as a daisy, having aged not at all. Includes a full libretto with translations and a newly commissioned essay about the recording, plus some wonderful acrchive photos of the sessions themselves. It's all housed in a little cloth-bound book, easily fitted on CD shelves.
