Notes and Editorial Reviews
Seen as one the high points of his musical career, and this performance especially as one of the most memorable, the late Maestro Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic’s appearance at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan, in October 1994 featured Modest Mussorgsky’s tone poem A Night on Bare Mountain in its seldom-heard original version, Igor Stravinsky’s suite from his ballet The Firebird, and Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, which only met modest success upon its 1888 orchestral premiere but became before long one of the composer’s best loved and most often heard works.
