Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Erster Theil or first part of the Clavier Übung—the six partitas—makes its mark with a comprehensive overview of every style available to Bach, from the archaic to the modern, and from abstract musical thought to the dances of the street and the theatre. Likewise, there is a clear gradual progression in style from the first movement of the first partita, a prelude based on seventeenth-century improvisational techniques, to the last movement of the sixth, at face value a crotchety gigue with an archaic time signature which nonetheless destroys the entire notion of Baroque dance and ushers in modern music.
