Notes and Editorial Reviews
Italian opera boasts no shortage of romantic arias, and many of the most popular are collected here as sung by an assortment of singers including some of the superstars of the business. Kiri Te Kanawa lends her lyric soprano to favorites by Puccini, while Luciano Pavarotti is heard in the great tenor showpieces from "La donna è mobile" to the inevitable program-closer, "Nessum dorma!" Cleverly, arias from the same opera, though recorded in different times and places, are juxtaposed side by side to create a slightly more dramatic illusion of extended scenes from 'La bohème,' 'Rigoletto' and 'L'elisir d'amore,' as sopranos and tenors answer each other from one track to the next.
AMORE II is less a sequel to the original AMORE release than an update of it-several of the same arias and performances appear, but now side by side with rising stars such as the bel canto specialist Andrea Rost, heard in two Donizetti numbers, and the tenor Marcello Alvarez. For a mixture of familiar and new voices in this repertoire, this compilation should satisfy any listener's appetite for operatic romance.
