Following on from his critically-acclaimed recordings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Trio Sonatas for Organ, Robert Costin has recorded both books of The Well-Tempered Clavier. He has chosen to perform these extraordinary works on the organ of Trinity College, Cambridge. The result is a performance of technical brilliance, which listeners will have come to expect from this wonderful musician, and also a chance to hear this instrument in all its glory as it is taken through the 48 preludes and fugues. Costin’s performance exudes breathtaking dexterity and a wonderful variety of color. This project has clearly been a labor of love for Robert Costin, and one admires his consistently excellent playing. Any new recording of the '48' for solo organ is to be welcomed, especially with an outstanding instrument. The Trinity Metzler organ is magnificent; combining it with the chapel's warm but clear acoustic provides the ideal venue for this repertoire. Costin's performance can be described as straightforward, with well-chosen tempos and neat articulation, well-suited to the organ.
