Transcendent performance marred by recording qual September 22, 2013
By S. Collins (Weehawken, NJ) -- See All My Reviews
Jonas Kaufmann's interpretations of these songs will be legend. Rarely do we get to hear an artist become inhabited by the music and lyrics as happens within this genius. It's unfortunate that the engineering staff were not quite as competent as Mr. Kaufmann, because the sonic quality is a bit disappointing. It's just a guess, but perhaps the recordings were made slightly "hot," causing a brittleness on loud passages that made me reach too often for the remote. Or maybe it's that old bugaboo, the standard Red Book CD format that is to blame, as it is difficult to get it sounding natural. Even so, the less-than-ideal sound quality should not put off purchase of this CD by anyone who wants to witness a great artist and fine orchestra, working seamlessly for a transcendent experience. If your sound system is less than transparent, you may never hear a problem. Let's hope in future the engineering team is up to the challenge, and also selects SACD for distribution. Report Abuse

 Truly magnificent April 28, 2013
By S. Phillips (Minneapolis, MN) -- See All My Reviews
Dear Opera Fans and Those Yet-to-Be, After the pleasure of hearing and seeing Jonas Kaufmann in the Ring and Faust via the Met in HD the past two seasons, I might seem prejudiced. With each appearance, my admiration grew. The combination of a magnificent voice, plus effortless immersion in the characters, accompanied by great good looks, doesn't come along that often. Mr. Kaufmann truly inhabits his roles without straining. The orchestra played magnificently, adding depth to all. Wagner isn't easy for singers or orchestras! Adding Rienzi and Wesendonck-Lieder is a lovely bonus. As always, many thanks to ArkivMusic for excellent service. --SP Report Abuse

Wagner Singing for a New Age March 30, 2013
By Burr Phillips (Dallas, TX) -- See All My Reviews
The consistent beauty and ease of singing as displayed on every track of this superbly engineered recording should remain a standard for Wagner singing for the foreseeable future. Kaufmann's lyrical, unfailingly musical approach to virtually every phrase is balm to the ear and inspiration to the soul. Having heard his North American recital tour of 2011 as well as his recent Met Opera PARSIFAL, I can attest to the fact that his art is no mere recording marvel - he is the genuine article in music that yearns for his ripe, urgent sound and instincts. That he is partnered so ably and sympathetically by the Deutschen Oper Berlin Orchester under Donald Runnicles rounds this musical offering out to a fare-thee-well. May it be the first (Wagner) of many more to come. Viva Kaufmann and Runnicles!!! Report Abuse

 Kaufmann's Wagner CD March 20, 2013
By Thomas I. (Lebanon, PA) -- See All My Reviews
Jonas Kaufmann's Wagner recital is definitely a winner! It's ever so rewarding to hear all these excerpts sung with such refinement. Stunning vocal sound, superb musicianship, and a genuine understanding of all he performs are all so readily apparent to the listener. The disc is invaluable for its inclusion of the Wesendonck-Lieder. Hearing them sung by a tenor of this caliber is a special treat. Report Abuse

ANOTHER LAURITZ MELCHIOR March 16, 2013
By ROBERT E.  FOX (OCALA, FL) -- See All My Reviews
WHAT IS A HELDENTENOR? ITS A PROVERBIAL HERO, BUT WITH A CAPACITY FOR LYRICISM. NOTE THE SWORD SCENE FROM WALKURE , THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS NAME AND PARENTHOOD FROM LOHENGRIN AND THEN LISTEN TO THE PRAYER SCENE FROM RIENZI. HE HAS IT ALL. TOO BAD THAT DECCA DID NOT INCLUDE THE FORGING SCENE FROM SIEGFRIED, BUT HOW MUCH CAN BE SQUEEZED ONTO ONE DISC. THE WESENDONCK-LEIDER. TO THE WRITER, GERMAN LIEDER WAS DIETRICH FISCHER-DIESKAU AND MAHLER. THIS IS A REVELATION. NOTE ESPECIALLY "IN THE HOTHOUSE" KAUFMAN HAS IT ALL! Report Abuse

Kaufmann truly is ein heldentenor March 12, 2013
By D. Hamilton (Indianapolis, IN) -- See All My Reviews
Kaufmann's voice and performance are astounding. Gergiev's conducting is very good. Stemme is a wonderful Brunnhilde. Gubanova sings Fricka very well. Kampe sings Sieglinde exceptionally well and Petrenko is a totally adequate Hunding. Only Pape's Wotan is wanting. All in all this is an excellent version of Die Walkure with a stunning gem in Kaufmann's performance. Report Abuse
