Excellent Effort July 20, 2013 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "In my opinion, this very fine Naxos 'Dutchman' has a number of strengths and very few weaknesses. Conducted by Pinchas Steinberg, the excellent Austrian Radio and Television Symhpony Orchestra plays Wagner's tempestuous musical score with commitment, dedication, and understanding, thus providing a firm foundation for the work of the singers. Alfred Muff (the Dutchman), Ingrid Haubold (Senta), Erich Knodt (Daland), Peter Seiffert (Erik), Jorg Hering (Helmsman), and Marga Schiml(Mary) are all established and excellent European opera stars, and thus bring a sense of elan, authenticity, and sprightliness which I thoroughly enjoyed. Professional critics may find this Naxos interpretation somewhat lacking in power and overall gravitas found in recordings by bigger stars and bigger orchestras, but I found everything to be highly satisfactory and a true listening pleasure. Naxos's Dutchman thus merits a solid recommendation, especially considering its bargain price." Report Abuse
