Notes and Editorial Reviews

Mozart's Concerto for flute and harp has had some unkind things said about it by various writers (who perhaps were borrowing the judgement from each other rather than forming it for themselves), but to me it is fresh and inventive and, for its period, unusually well scored. Even the oboes and horns are allowed to assert themselves, while the solo instruments themselves produce the most entrancing texture. Mozart's surely random and unconsidered remark that he did not care for the sound of either flute or harp has been quoted rather too often; he cared enough to write for them with sympathy and to take a lot of trouble over the concerto as a whole. On this record it receives a carefully scaled and understanding performance, to which the Read more orchestra contributes in full. The harp is a little more closely balanced than the flute, but this perhaps is inevitable if it is to make its mark. The label or sleeve might have told us who wrote the cadenzas. The one in the first movement is pleasing, the one in the second movement rather too long for my taste, and I was not sorry to find that the one in the finale had been avoided by means of a five bar cut.
