Notes and Editorial Reviews

Järvi recorded Shostakovich’s Symphonies Nos. 1-10 for Chandos in Scotland, and Nos. 11-15 in Gothenburg for DG. On the whole, the Chandos recordings were more successful: better recorded, more exciting, and unremittingly intense. This Fifth is excellent: raw and edgy where it needs to be, a touch rough in spots—but this isn’t music that demands the last degree of refinement or finesse, save perhaps in the Largo. Järvi in good form, as he is here, always knew how to capture a climax, and he was never afraid to let his players strut their stuff and get carried away by the power of the music. The ballet music is fluff, of course—you won’t believe the plot of The Bolt (even Shostakovich was horrified)—but Järvi and his team play Read more the living daylights out of it, which is really the only option. If you aren’t interested in collecting this whole series, or just want a fine Fifth in very good sound, this is still well worth considering
