COSTELEY 27 Songs Bruno Boterf, cond; Ludus Modalis RAMÉE 1301 (71:54 Text and Translation)

Guillaume Costeley (c.1530-1606) is not the most well known of the 16th-century French composers of song. Nothing is known of his life before his arrival in Paris about 1554. He entered the service of Henry II and his three sons, all of them successors to the throne who added little to its stature, the young Charles IX being the one he tutored. Virtually all of his work survives Read more in a single publication of 1570, which began with a long dedication containing a valuable analysis of his music. He married that year and moved to Normandy, though remaining in the king’s service.

This is the only full disc devoted to him in my collection, consisting of 27 tracks including five instrumental selections (all brief except for one running five minutes). A Sei Voci recorded a full disc for Erato in 1988 (not issued here), but half of the contents overlap this disc and seven others are heard, including the Latin-texted Audite caeli . By my count 14 of the 27 tracks have never been recorded before, but the other 13 include the most popular of his songs, Mignonne allons voir si la Roze , recorded over a dozen times. As an indication that some effort has been made to explore the unrecorded songs, there are at least 19 songs recorded elsewhere that are not included here, including the very popular Allons gay, gay bergers , recorded at least nine times. The songs heard here are varied from serious to comic, in addition to categories such as martial and civil. The notes are helpful in characterizing the songs.

Boterf and this ensemble have been heard recently in music of Lassus ( Fanfare 35:6) and Le Jeune (34:6). The seven singers are caught up close, so individual voices are audible. Janequin and Sermisy are just about the only composers of 16th-century French song that enjoy a whole disc to themselves, so Costeley is now in rarified company. This program certainly does him credit, and specialists will grab it without hesitation.
