von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti to name a few. For the second time in three years, celebrated conductor Franz Welser-Möst returned to the podium in 2013 for this extraordinary event. Welser-Möst is the music director of The Cleveland Orchestra, General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera and has been nominated for two Grammy® Awards.
The Vienna New Year’s Concert is unique and has often been imitated, but not equaled, with a live broadcast on television in over 70 countries around the world with over 40 million viewers. PBS aired the 2012 concert on over 181 stations and broadcasted it nationally again in 2013. The program traditionally revolves around waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family and includes works by other composers of that era. This proven formula blends well-known classics with premieres of works that have never been recorded and rarely heard. The repertoire for the New Year’s Concert 2013 includes more premieres than any previous concert. Read less

By Linda Goddard (Reno, NV) See All My Reviews
"The selections were brisk and melodious, well suited for the happy affair of ringing in the New Year. Finally, we see some female musicians in the orchestra!Overall, real enjoyable and on a par with prior years' concerts, I think."
