Notes and Editorial Reviews

The scintillating virtuoso pianist and composer William Vincent Wallace wrote a sheaf of memorable compositions for his instrument. He met the huge demand for sheet music by producing a series of waltzes, nocturnes, mazurkas, barcarolles, and other works dazzling in their variety, invention, wit, humour and charm. Their tone ranges from Latin American to Spanish and from seascape to melancholy reflection. Widely admired exponents of Wallace’s music, Rosemary Tuck and Richard Bonynge are joined by the Tait Chamber Orchestra for the brilliant Grande Fantaisie La Cracovienne.

A Superb Recital December 2, 2017 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "I agree with Patricia W's comments from several years ago; she has it exactly right. Pianist Rosemary Tuck delivers a scintillating performance of the solo piano music from Irish composer and world traveler William Wallace. Titled Chopinesque, this Naxos disk more than lives up to its moniker, as many of Wallace's works are formatted in the mode of the great Polish composer- mazurkas, polonaises, nocturnes, valses, etc. At the end of the program, Rosemary Tuck is joined by conductor Richard Bonynge and the Tait Chamber Orchestra for a nice performance of Wallace's Grand Fantaisie La Cracovienne, which also can easily conjure up images of Chopin's works for piano and orchestra. Timing out at a heft 79 minutes, the entire recording provides a distinct listening pleasure, and I doubt any Arkivmusic patron who tries this excellent recording will come away dissatisfied. I give it a solid recommendation." Report Abuse
Easy listening January 25, 2013 By Patricia W. (Big Arm, MT) See All My Reviews "If you enjoy listening to Chopin you will also like this disc. It is very Chopinesque as they say on the cover. Somewhat Romantic period program music that is easy listening." Report Abuse
