Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is the second disc to come from Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli forces and it is already their second Gramophone Award. When I reviewed their Virgin Classics' recording of a reconstruction of a dogal coronation of 1595 (5/90) I admired their stylish blend of informed scholarship and sensitive musicianship allied to performances from musicians well-versed in the language of the period. Added to that the music was recorded with great immediacy in the acoustically impressive surroundings of Brinkburn Priory in Northumberland. For this reconstruction of a Vespers that could have be held in St Mark's, Venice McCreesh shows a real understanding of the placing and choreography of the participants in the musical aspects of the liturgy. He has Read more also been quite rigorous with the historical evidence in rejecting the large ensembles still preferred by some interpreters of the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 in favour of the more intimate groupings that we can be sure Monteverdi knew. The effect overall is a genuine sense of continuity and cohesion between the different works and forces employed rather than a disjointed series of unrelated pieces. And there is some glorious music here, beautifully performed. It would be invidious to single out particular singers; suffice it to say that there are some fine contributions of great delicacy and subtlety. There are some carefully thought-out and gracefullyshaped instrumental playing, and all the performers apply embellishments and passaggi with great naturalness and conviction. In short, this is an heroic achievement of the highest possible order.
