"Although this phenomenally popular body of music has attracted almost every important pianist of the last 150 years, its unlikely that Frédéric Chopin ever found, or will ever find, a more ideal interpreter than Artur Rubinstein... The key to Rubinstein's greatness as a Chopin interpreter was the combination of utter naturalness as a performer and his enormously sophisticated musical mind. Nothing ever seems forced or premeditated: there are no sharp edges or sudden flashes of insight. In fact, the illusion the performances create is one of the music flowing, without benefit of a human intermediary, directly from Chopin's heart to the listener's... At almost every moment in these classic recordings, Rubinstein discovers some wonder of colorRead more or phrasing, brings out a beautiful inner voice it seems we've never heard before, and in general creates the impression of a man for whom playing this often fiendishly difficult music is no more difficult than breathing or making love." -- Jim Sveda, from The Record Shelf Guide to the Classical Repertoire [reviewing the 11-CD box set of Chopin recordings by Artur Rubinstein, RCA 260822] Read less
Good Chopin for a Beginner.September 7, 2012By Richard Buckley (Oakmont, PA)See All My Reviews"This disc includes 14 of Chopin's best works and almost 75 minutes of great music. It is an outstanding bargain and a fine introduction to the composer's work. The selections are excellent and will satisfy some listeners' appetites for Chopin,s output.
I have reservations about Rubinstein's delivery of these favorites. He seems to me to be a bit shallow and ordinary. The pace of the music is a little slow, and, at times tends to put me to sleep. Chopin's music should be handled with kid gloves, but, for my taste, Rubinstein takes that a little too far. For me, he is uninspiring. There are many introductory discs of the composer's work out there to be had, and while this is not the worst, I don't think it is the best. Van Cliburn seems particularly suited to these superb melodies, and Ashkenazy also handles this repertoire well.
You won't go far wrong settling for this bargain disc, but there are better out there. Try one and hear for yourself. "Report Abuse
