Notes and Editorial Reviews

Few musicians have had such a tragic fate as Jean-Frederic Edelmann. Not only was he unjustly guillotined but posterity has insidiously maltreated him: one dictionary slates that he 'sowed terror in Strasbourg' and refers to him as a 'fashionable musician and harpsichordist'. This explains why his oeuvre has remained in reserve at the Bibliolheque Nationale in Paris and has never been played. Our aim in presenting this record is to rehabilitate this fervent man, who, before devoting himself to politics, was a composer who captivated his contemporaries and deserves to be counted among the precursors of Romanticism.
