Notes and Editorial Reviews

The rediscovery of the opera Das Käthchen von Heilbronn by Carl Reinthaler, a work based on the drama of the same name by Heinrich von Kleist, employs the compilation of the score material used in the recently inaugurated Erfurt Theater Edition. As Dr. Arne Langer, drama director at the Erfurt Theater writes, "The reconstruction of the performance material proved to be necessary because the publishing company that had originally printed the work no longer exists and no binding guidelines for its performance were found." The opera’s revival was well worth the effort because it is more than a mere occasional work and the music meets qualitatively high demands. Samuel Bächli, conductor of the stage production and the CD recording, is convinced Read more that this edition of the score will inspire a renaissance for the almost entirely forgotten Reinthaler. The composer was born in the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt in 1822. He obtained his first job as a voice teacher at the Cologne Conservatory and later moved on to Bremen, where he served as cathedral organist, director of the cathedral choir, and city music director beginning in 1858. His musical style is reminiscent of Mendelssohn in many details – as can also be heard on our first ambitious CPO recording of his oratorio "Jephta und seine Tochter". - CPO Read less
