Notes and Editorial Reviews

When Zdenek Macal's 1982 version of Dvorák's New World Symphony was first issued, EG spoke of "his outstanding new version [the first movement with exposition repeat observed], superbly recorded, arguably the best sounding New World at any price", and went on to praise the performance in detail, noting the "Czech pastoral freshness" of the Scherzo alongside its crisp energy, "reflecting the insights of a Czech-born conductor". I enjoyed the performance very much and it sounds more vivid than ever on CD. The bonus of the Symphonic Variations is worthwhile too, even if the performance has less impulse than the symphony.
