MOZART Piano Sonatas: No. 11 in A; No. 2 in F; No. 13 in B? Aldo Ciccolini (pn) HARMONIA MUNDI 03 (52:54)

For listeners of my generation, Aldo Ciccolini, who was born in Naples in 1925, will always be known as the man who in the late ’60s popularized Erik Satie’s piano music with a series of recordings on Angel. I am holding those LPs in my hand. They feature on the front cover a drawing of the composer by Picasso and a list of the odd-sounding compositions contained within, beginning with Read more style="font-style:italic">Trois Morceaux en forme poire , followed by Trois Gymnopédies . Who knew what a gymnopédie was, and how could this ironic, startling, and delicate music catch on in the year of assassinations and riots? Perhaps wit, irony, and delicate melody were an antidote to the times. It helped people live.

That’s what Ciccolini says of Mozart, whose music he has been playing since he was a 13-year-old child: simply, “Mozart me fait du bien. Il m’aide a vivre.” Mozart does me good; he helps me live. Recorded on a rich Bechstein, Ciccolini’s Mozart is elegant, relaxed, unencumbered. In an interview contained here, he tells us, as did Tovey, that a Mozart pianist needs “ a feeling for vocality and color,” as well as a familiarity with Mozart’s operas. He also credits his years of accompanying singers such as Elizabeth Schwarzkopf for his intimate knowledge of the conversational side of Mozart. The “vocality” of his playing does not mean that he milks every phrase, even in such movements as the Andante cantabile of K 333; he lets the music flow. Nor is he, as some pianists are, arch or prissy in stating the theme of the Allegretto that follows. I find Ciccolini’s new Mozart recording wholly admirable.
