Notes and Editorial Reviews

This selection is a Hybrid Multichannel Super Audio CD. The Stereo Hybrid SACD program can be played on any standard compact disc player. The DSD Surround and Stereo programs require an SACD player for playback.

“The works are one of the gems of Mozart’s entire output - written originally for the natural horn without valves… these tapes made in l971 in the acoustically famed Walthamstow Town Hall are at state of the art level as far as my ears are concerned. The works are also a perfect choice for surround sound since the French horn is the only instrument that directs most of its sound energy away from the front of the orchestra - thus resulting in more reflectance off surfaces in the hall and more of a surrounding effect.”

“As played by Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin's with Alan Civil as the soloist, with optimal spatial quality and resolution in the sonic soundstage, these lovely, gracious performances are all that one could possibly wish (and yes, I know all about Dennis Brain, thank you).” ---Dr. Phil Muse, Classik Reviews (May 2003)

“We have almost all Pentatone RQR discs. Acoustically, this is the best one. It is also the most natural surround recording in all our collection. The original analogue quadro recording is warm and full of detail, and the space is literally palpable. DSD MC transfer was made without any interference from the original 4 channel tape to a stunning effect. The playing is superb, solo horn focused and warm. It’s difficult to say more, as this is such a perfect recording. Go for it, especially if you listen to your music in surround!” ---SA-CD info.com

Quad revisited March 2, 2014 By Archibald S. (Boulder, CO) See All My Reviews "Another excellent SACD rendition of the old quad recordings. The ASMF plays its part with enthusiasm, but the horn sounds some what recessed as if it were playing from its normal position in the orchestra. Reviewed in stereo only, maybe the rear speakers would give the horn more presence. Overall very enjoyable. Another great quad reissue on SACD is the ASMF playing Rossini overtures." Report Abuse
I love the Horn Concertos May 19, 2012 By Richard H. (Glendale, AZ) See All My Reviews "I don't have a surround sound system but I do have an SACD player which I listen to in two channel mode. This is indeed a great recording of the horn concertos. I consider all of these Mozart masterpieces and Civil with Marriner and the ASMF do a fantastic job performing them. I have several recordings of these concertos and I play this one most of all. It belongs in any classical music library." Report Abuse
