Simon Standage, Elizabeth Wilcock (in D minor concerto); English Concert/Trevor Pinnock. Deutsche Grammophon Archiv 410 646-2 (recorded 1983)
As one would expect, the textures are light in the accounts from Simon Standage and Trevor Pinnock, the playing dry and articulate, though tonally less appealing than with some if your focus is on the solo instrument. Standage does not give evidence of a big personality here – but that’s a 19th- and 20th-century concept anyway. Pinnock provides the usual straight-ahead accompaniment; his tempos in the fast movements are bracing, but well managed. The accounts are recorded in typically bright, close-up fashion, with ample detail. – Ted Libbey, author of
