Older Recording of Mature, Unfamiliar Russian Cha October 20, 2012

"This remarkable historical recording contains chamber works by Alexander Borodin, Reinhold Gliere, and Nikolai Myaskovsky. Recordings date from 1949, the early 1950's and the mid-1960's; thus, the sound quality is slightly degraded, although re-mastering has done a good job preserving and restoring some of the luster of these performances. Rest assured that you will not encounter any significant problems in terms of 'listenability' with this disk. Borodin's String Sextet, Gliere's 3rd String Quartet, and Myaskovsky's 9th String Quartet are not frequently encountered in chamber music concerts, which is why this recording is such a treasure; all are mature and serious chamber music compositions, well worth exploring. The Bolshoi Theater Quartet's performance is beyond reproach, so if you like chamber music and can live with the age of these recordings, give this disk a try. This is very close to a 5-star rating in my opinion, lacking only the modern recording technology needed to bring out the full aesthetic beauty of these very fine Russian works. Recommended."
