Notes and Editorial Reviews

PALESTRINA Missa Assumpta est Maria. Salve Regina à 5. Assumpta est Maria à 6. Ave regina caelorum à 5. Song of Songs : excerpts. Diffusa est gratia. Assumpta est Maria à 5. Ave Maria à 5 Harry Christophers, dir; The Sixteen CORO COR 16091 (64:10 Text and Translation)

The is the first disc of a new Palestrina series. Excerpts from the Song of Read more Songs will be included on each disc (three of the 29 pieces are here), but Harry Christophers makes it clear that he will not be able to cover all 104 Masses. He begins with a Mass that has been well represented in the catalogs, though the most recent version was recorded 15 years ago under Timothy Brown ( Fanfare 21:6), the fifth choral recording of this Mass. The other two earlier recordings were made by vocal ensembles like this one under Peter Phillips and Mark Brown. (It is interesting that Brown is the producer of this recording, a career that has replaced his work as singer and director in Pro Cantione Antiqua.) In his notes Phillips wrote that this Mass ranks with the great Missa Papae Marcelli (the only Palestrina Mass that he previously recorded, 27: 6) as the two most celebrated six-voice Masses among the 22 settings that the composer wrote. This is despite its late publication (1835, a date Gustave Reese does not cite in his invaluable listing of the Masses), a parody of a six-voice motet that likewise remained in manuscript until modern times. The motet is included here along with the five-voice setting that was part of the collection of Offertoria for the entire year published in 1593 (the text, of course, is the offertory for the feast of the Assumption, August 15). The notes here confuse these two motet settings. The rest of this program includes another of the 1593 offertories, Diffusa est gratia , and three other Marian motets.

Christophers has already shown his interest in recording the Masses of Victoria, so this new project promises to be as rewarding as that one. Christophers has always emphasized his broad interest in music across the centuries, but composers of the Renaissance (both continental and insular) have brought out the best of his ensemble. Expanded to 18 voices, it can put three voices on a part, yielding a warmer sound than other vocal ensembles, which usually have two voices to a part. I hope Christophers will vary his choice of Masses among both familiar and unrecorded works. Meanwhile, this is a fine choice if you want to replace an earlier version of the Mass.

Sublime. September 2, 2012 By John W. (WOORI YALLOCK, VIC) See All My Reviews "Palastrina wrote this suberb music for the Assumption 300 years ago, and for it's time it has never been surpassed. The singers seem to flow towards you, and then gently recede, in a mystical way. To say this presentation is sublime, is an understatement." Report Abuse
