An outstanding Engima Variations, individually expressive, yet undoubtedly authentic, with many touches of color that show a feeling for the delicacy of the scoring.

The recording was made in Guildford Cathedral which lends itself well to the Enigma (if perhaps less readily to the coupling). The spaciousness of the acoustic is strikingly suited to Norman Del Mar's broad-spanned reading, which without in any way minimizing the characterization of the individual variations, nevertheless makes the seams between them almost invisible. The dedicated atmosphere of the performance (closely based on Elgar's own recording, as JNM pointed out in his original review) creates consistent tension, and notably so in the music's
Read more quieter pages : the opening of "Nimrod", for instance, and especially the electric pianissimo before the finale. (The performance is greatly helped by the absence of a turnover break here.) An outstanding interpretation then, individually expressive, yet undoubtedly authentic, with many touches of colour that show a feeling for the delicacy of the scoring. The recording offers a very wide dynamic range, but a natural balance and the 'distanced effect' of the gentler music is entirely in keeping with the overall acoustic.
