Notes and Editorial Reviews

For those who want a first-class version of Tchaikovsky's famous concerto, superbly recorded this can be recommended without reservation. It is a reading on the largest, broadest scale (the weighty opening horns make this immediately apparent), yet the lyrical contrasts are most sensitively made in all three movements. When this record was made in 1971 (although today it still sounds like a new, recording) Charles Dutoit was little known. Now one is not in the least surprised to note how much this performance owes to the splendid partnership he makes with Martha Argerich, especially striking in the delicate outer sections of the slow movement. -- Gramophone [10/1978, reviewing Tchaikovsky no 1 from the LP release DG 2535295]

There have been others to match the bustle and brilliance of Argerich's Prokofiev, her coloristic range, her drive, her flashiness, her straining at the leash. But I'm not sure I could name anyone who has so satisfyingly combined all those qualities, who has given us such a rocket-launched recapitulation in the first movement, such circus-routine vividness in the following variations (Prokofiev grew up in a Russia where `circusization of the arts' was one of the 'in' concepts), or such monstrous, hyperbolic fairy-tale imagery in the finale, and all done with the most engaging reckless abandon.
