Notes and Editorial Reviews

This spectacular Feature Film version of the Gaetano Donizetti, skillfully directed by Cesare Barlacchi, showcases the alluring Sophia Loren in one if her first starring roles. Along with the voices of La Scala and the Rome Opera Company stars, Loren and her cohorts transform the classic opera into a picturesque DVD of the under-appreciated Opera that along with Lucia de Lammermoor, ranks as Donizetti's greatest achievement in tragic opera.

A disappointment April 5, 2012 By Perry S. (New Plymouth, -) See All My Reviews "I have several DVD's of films of operas - Verdi and Lehar. These films are all true to the opera. This one is not. To start with it is only 80 minutes long, or about half the opera's length.
It is more a documentary or a synopsis - an unseen narrator with shortish scenes and singing. Even some of the best arias are abbreviated. And because there is no flow, the singers do not get involved in the story. Both Fernando and Leonora prefer volume to shading or emotion.
A good way of introducing someone to the opera, but not a film for opera lovers."
