There is no reason for any fan of good singing to shy away from the title "Auf Einer Burg" (In a Castle) on this premiere album by the award-winning young Dutch baritone Henk Neven. The album title comes from one of the songs within the cycle Liederkreis, Op. 39 by Robert Schumann, with poetry by Eichendorff. Neven precedes the Schumann work with a selection of songs by a lieder composer who was once highly acclaimed and now largely overlooked; Carl Loewe. Hans Eijsackers is the pianist who accompanies Neven with refinement and insight. Anyone who loves the magic and dramatic poetry of art song should experience this album which nicely balances both rare and famous songs performed by a an acclaimed new singer, who has performed atRead more the BBC Proms and Wigmore Hall. A Smart SingerApril 15, 2012By Melvin Rosenberg (Pasadena, CA)See All My Reviews"I first heard Henk Neven sing Schubert's Winterreise, recorded by the BBC. I was amazed by the sensitivity and musicality of this young singer's interpretation of this gem of the song literature. So I checked and found his first commercial recording, several of the songs of the too little-known German contemporary of Schubert, Carl Loewe. Again Neven amazes one with thoughtful, beautifully vocalized interpretation. The Schumann Liederkreis completes a highly satisfying song recital. Warmly recommended."Report Abuse
