Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Turn of the Screw bids fair to be considered Benjamin Britten's most perfect opera, indeed his greatest work in any form, and this remains its finest recording. Yes, the sound is mono, but very good mono. The playing of the English Opera Group under the composer's direction is magnificent, the cast unbeatable, headlined by Peter Pears' incomparably creepy Quint and Jennifer Vyvyan's moving and desperate Governess. The two kids are also terrific. Decca has included this performance in its multi-disc sets of Britten's complete operas (assuming that they are still available), but if you want the opera separately, then this Arkivmusic.com "on demand" production is just the ticket. Listen to the hair-raising last scene of the first Read more act, or to the unearthly dialog between the two ghosts that begins Act 2, and marvel at Britten's largeness of vision expressed with miraculous precision and economy. Thrilling, simply thrilling.
